Such Utter Dreck

I was going to write a long and detailed screed about the movie Bride Wars until I thought, fuck it, that piece of crap “film” already stole two hours of my life.

So, here’s the short of it. Bride Wars hates women more than any other movie I have seen in recent memory. According to the script (written by SNL’s Casey Wilson. And for the record, I’m not usually all, “Hey, every woman has to be as progressive as I hope to be some day,” but Casey? Come ON.), women are all marriage-obsessed, catty bitches who baffle and bemuse the men in their lives and have nothing better to do than plot revenge against each other like some 2nd grade production of Macbeth.

I cannot imagine what Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway thought when they decided to take on the project other than, “Wouldn’t it be fun to pee on feminism?” There is no plot point in this movie that doesn’t play into some hateful stereotype about women and their emotional, hysterical, PMS-having harridan ways.

And…that’s really all I have to say about it. If the movie was even a touch smarter or sweeter, it would be worth a full critique. As it is, BW doesn’t even deserve the time I just took to type these few words.

Long Time

Writing is like flossing for me. When I’m not careful, I get out of the habit, even though I know I’ll be happier and healthier for doing it. There is this myth that creativity without spontaneity is rote. Boring. But making something like writing or painting or singing a habit allows for so much life within the day to day routine of it. Some actual beauty can emerge when there’s a structure shaping the process.
